Summer Saturdays 1989 - Devon class 31 turns

1989 was the last year that class 31s appeared in Devon on scheduled services. I spent a fair amount of time lineside during the Summer. When I found the 1980s Timewarp site I offered them my notes about 1V45/6, 1M63/5 services which they published and were embellished with further observations from David Brown, Colin Brooks, Jack, Bez and 'The Timelord', only one of whom is known to me. The 1V26/1M37 page had additional info provided by Mark Harrison, David Brown, 'The Timelord', Mark Granger & Faggy . Sadly the Timewarp site disappeared in 2013 but I have been able to salvage the pages. It had not been updated since 2003, and dealt with things that happened over 25 years ago. This page combines the two Timewarp pages, and in the main shows the locomotives as allocated at Birmingham New Street. Some did not even make it to Devon; notes are made below. My contribution to these records was not complete; I worked nights and on occasions missed the first few services in the mornings. In addition to the normal booked turns there were a few surprises, space has been made for these as well.

All of this went on without the benefit of gen lines, texts or emails. The only sources of info were those 'in the know' and sympathetic station staff with a TOPS terminal.

Any gaps are due to my not having observed the services and any additions would be welcomed. I photographed quite a lot of these turns, but sadly with cheap print film and a lack of technique. Links have been provided to these images, where available. Any additions to this would be very welcome. Please email to 550zephyr@gmail.com and make the subject 89 or my efficient filters might nobble it.

See notes below table for further information on the turns in question.

Newton Abbot as standby. Then up at 1316 hauling 47656 DIT on 1M56.
